A few of you asked me "what's up with milk in bags?" from this post from Thursday morning.
And so I present to you... milk in a bag.
Each bag contains 3 smaller bags that we then put into a pitcher like this.
And now you know how Canadians buy their milk.

you taught me something new today. so what does it cost you for milk. i am paying about 2.50 a gallon
ReplyDeleteHey Pam :-) How are ya, girl? We pay about $3.97 for 4L bag.
ReplyDeleteAlright, I'll do it, I'll move to Canada...sounds fun to me...milk in a bag. :)
ReplyDeleteI wonder why it's in a bag instead of a gallon jug container? You do have cows up there, right??? :-)
ReplyDeleteWell that's different--I love learning about differences like that! I've never been to Canada despite living in MN; however I HAVE dated a Canadian . . . he was very into Curling . . . it didn't last long but I loved that he spoke French :)
ReplyDeleteI have an American-in-Canada friend who will go to Macs just to get milk in plastic jugs. She still hasn't warmed up to the idea of milk in bags.
ReplyDeleteWhoa, that's crazy! I've never heard of milk in a bag (not like THAT anyway!). =-) So why do Canadians do that? Is it easier for recycling or something?
ReplyDeleteFYI milk in a bag isn't available every where in Canada. I've only been in BC and AB and SK, the more western-er provinces and I have yet to see milk in a bag. Must be those crazy eastern-ers :) haha just kidding. Milk in a bag would be fun I think.
ReplyDeleteHey, for all the people from the States....you can get milk in a bag at your local Quik Trip (if you have one)...they also have cheap bananas ;o).
ReplyDeleteVery interesting. Our good friends are living in Dominica right now and have to buy "shelf milk". Milk found on a regular store shelf that doesn't need to be refrigeration until it's opened...
ReplyDeleteWe also get milk in bags here in England! We were having a lot of bother with people stealing milk from our door-steps, so they came up with the idea of just posting it through out mail-box!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! The milk man has no bother, and we get to get out milk or juice delivered without any bother!
This has been going on for a couple of years now, but it is cheaper and easier to buy it from the super-markets!
Really? I have a handful of Canadian friends and they've never shared that with me! How cool!
ReplyDeleteWithout bother--love it!
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you for answering this! I was one of the askers but you never answered so I thought I was just really dumb or something and everyone knew about milk in a bag except me. : )
Sweet!! That looks awesome! I would buy the milk in a bag anyday!
ReplyDeleteok is that milk sitting on the shelf? Is it Not refrigerated?
ReplyDeleteVery fun! I had to show Mike and Nolan the photos...Nolan's first question was of course.."Why???" LOL and Mike of course wanted to know how much you paid (which I see you answered). We pay about $3.50 per gallon for milk and go through WAY too much!
ReplyDeleteOh! One more thing - - you put the entire plastic bag into the pitcher? Where is the hole at? Is there a lid? How do you keep the bag from falling out when you tip it? (Wow, I guess that's THREE more things....but these guys are very curious!)
Laura - if THAT'S all it takes to get you here!
ReplyDeleteCop Mama - yes we have cows here! Sweet mercy. ;-)
Unkept Cook - I speak french. Does that impress you? I hope it doesn't make you want to date me. Just sayin.
Mapsgirl - ugh, takes up too much space in the fridge to buy jugs!
Classicly Amber - I'm not sure why it's packaged that way, although it certainly cuts down on recycling/space.
Erica - Weirdness. I thought all of Canada had milk like that. I guess the East is best ;-)
Jennifer - Look at you girl, rockin' the info!
HD - Did they tell you what that tastes like? Because my imagination is telling me it tastes gross.
Alice in Wonderland - your mailman shoves your milk through the mail slot? How big is it? (The slot, not the milk. Well, yeah, the milk too, I guess)
Jess - best kept secret ;-)
Brianne - I picture your face at the sight of milk in a bag, and I bet it's the same face I had when I saw it in a jug the first time
B-Dub - Hey girl! All the cool peeps buy milk this way
Mindy - Yep, it's refridgerated!
Karin - Hiya Buddy! Yeah, we buy a lot of milk too. I would say 5 bags a week at least. (20L) So, please tell your guys that yes, we put the bag inside the pitcher. It's a snug fit which keeps it from slipping out while pouring. We cut the corner off for the milk to come out. You may have to hold the opposite corner if the hole was snipped to big, because the top of the bag can flop over and spill milk everywhere. Hope that helps!
