She wanted to die. God had other plans.
Why does my life have to be so painful?
What’s wrong with me?
It’s not going to get better.
It could all be over soon, and then I won’t hurt anymore.
Kristen Anderson thought she had the picture-perfect life until strokes of gray dimmed her outlook: three friends and her grandmother died within two years. Still reeling from these losses, she was raped by a friend she thought she could trust. She soon spiraled into a seemingly bottomless depression.
One January night, the seventeen-year-old decided she no longer wanted to deal with the emotional pain that smothered her. She lay down on a set of cold railroad tracks and waited for a freight train to send her to heaven…and peace.
But Kristen's story doesn’t end there.
In Life, In Spite of Me this remarkably joyful young woman shares the miracle of her survival, the agonizing aftermath of her failed suicide attempt, and the hope that has completely transformed her life, giving her a powerful purpose for living.
Her gripping story of finding joy against all odds provides a vivid and unforgettable reminder that life is a gift to be treasured.
Oh my heart.
I started to read this book the day it arrived and finished it by mid-morning the next day. I just couldn't put it down.
The story begins on the night Kristen decides to take her own life, then flashes back to what brought her to that point, and then catches us up to the days following and her rehabilitation.
This book is a gentle and beautiful account of Kristen's path to Jesus, and how He restored her to wholeness and revealed her life's purpose. It is breathtaking.
Kristen is open and honest in her account of her actions and healing. She is engaging and sweet and just so real. I loved her letters to the reader that were written throughout. No one knows brokenness more than the broken, and she offers them hope.
As much as I loved this book, I would have liked to have read more about the struggles her parents and siblings would have faced in the wake of her decision. This book glosses over many facets of the aftermath, and I would have enjoyed reading about how they dealt with it.
Kristen's story is messy and heartbreaking and dark, yet so full of hope and beauty.

Oh wow! This sounds like a reall good book! Now I just gotta read it:)
ReplyDeleteA cause that is really important to my family is the American Heart Association. We just recently participated in the Jump Rope For Heart fund raiser thru my daughter's school. She was the top collector:)
Hey Kate! This looks like a good book. Cause or charity close to my heart...hmmm, there's a few actually that we support. There's one here where I live called Kids Food Basket. It packs meals for children in impoverished homes- to make sure they get at least one nutritionally sound meal a day. I can even bring my boys here to help pack! (there's not many kitchens like this that are safe for kids).
ReplyDeleteThat looks like an amazing book... one that I would have a hard time reading... but life changing non the less.
ReplyDeleteLets see... I am not big into charities... we tend to give through our church quite frequently.
Blessings!
Amanda
Wow. Sounds like such a good book!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite charity would have to be LRM foundation...it's a foundation that was founded in memory of a late cousin.
A book that heart-breakingly many could relate.
ReplyDeleteI would love to read it to learn how to better encourage and pray!
We love to support several different charities through our awesome church! My favorites are the crisis pregnancy center and the outreaches to needy families with small children.
I just love books that are so good you can't put down! Sounds like this is one of them. This book will definitely be put on my wish list at Barnes & Noble!
ReplyDeleteI am actually in the process of trying to start an out of school time program for the school children in our tiny town. It has been on my heart for a few years and if it takes off the way I am hoping, I can quit my full time job and pour my heart into these kids! Our town is so small and so many kids have no place to go after school or during the summer while their parents work. I would rather see them someplace safe and having "good" fun than running the streets or in front of a tv/computer/video games all day. I am going before the school board next week to be approved!!
Since I don't have a thing to tweet with can I just shout out "tweet, tweet"?
ReplyDeleteI don't support one particular charity. I try to give where I see a need. I find I do tend to help people with children most of all. I try and support the causes from Church as well, most recently making beds from milk bags for Haiti.
Sounds like a great book my friend :)
