Would You Have Said Anything?

While poking around the mall on Monday doing my Christmas shopping, I went into a store that sold DVDs. The guy behind the cash register greeted me, and when I looked at him I literally did a double-take.

On his shirt was a name tag that said Hello, My Name Is Satan.

I told myself to let it go.

Instead I asked him, "What's with the name tag?"

He smiled and told me that it was part of his shirt and rubbed his hand over it to show me.

I was shocked but didn't say anything else. I just walked out. What do you say to that?

I wish I had said something. Perhaps asked him if he realized how offensive his shirt was on a regular day, but at this time of year?

The more I think if it, the more my blood boils. How could someone be so ignorant as to wear a shirt that depicts the name of the antichrist in the season that celebrates the birth of Christ? And so proudly?? Obviously he isn't a Christian, but I am and I was a customer in his store.

Am I wrong to be so upset?

I can't even remember what the name of the store was. I was wandering around for so long and lost my sense of direction. I don't know that I could find it again if I ever wanted to go back to speak with him again.

Would you have let it go, or would you have said something?

  1. I too, would have been shocked. I think, instead of being angry and offended... I would have just been really sad.

People truly, need the Lord. I don't know what I would have said.

1 Peter 3:15 - a great reminder to always give an answer for the reason of the hope that is in us.

Nice to meet you! Found you via Pixel Perfect's blog.

    Hugs,

  2. Honestly, I probably would have been passive aggressive and given him a look and went about my business. I mean... stuff like that is so common these days...

But I think God must be talking to you if this has stayed on your heart girl!

    Blessings-

  3. Well, you know me and you know I totally would've said something!

I would file a complaint with the store manager.

  4. I would have been totally shocked... so shocked I would have walked out and not said anything either. Offensive? Totally! Would I have said anything? Prob not.. just walked off and prayed for him and kept going would have most likely been my response.

Very dis-tasteful on his part tho!!

  5. I liken it to a little kid who just wants attention. No, it would not offended me, I would have just rolled my eyes. Other people's beliefs don't really have any bearing on what I believe.

  6. I so wish I were one of those people who can say something. But I'm not. (yet, anyway)

And I suspect that the store owner/manager wouldn't care one way or the other or else he wouldn't have worn the shirt. But no doubt about it, I wouldn't shop there again.

  7. I wouldn't have said anything but I can't believe that is appropriate for employee attire.

  8. I would like to think I would have said something, but I'm not sure. It would really depend on the situation and even what store it was.
Unfortunately, we live in a time where we're told to be tolerant and respectful of all religions. Unfortunately, it really only applies to any religion "except" Christianity. It seems Christianity does not deserve the same respect or tolerance that is shown to most other religions. People get away with saying and doing offensive things to and about Christians that would NEVER be tolerated or acceptable if it involved any other religion. That's where you turn the other cheek - wipe the dust off your feet and walk out of the store....

  9. People who wear things like that are just trying to get attention. One thing my pastor has taught us is to just say in your mind, "God Bless him/her." This is obviously a confused, lost person.

  10. Probably not, I mean why give him the satisfaction that you are upset. I think that's the point. Besides we are not to act as the world acts and a reaction, however drastic, sarcastic or rude, would have been a worldly reaction. The manager may or may not have cared. Afterall, Christians wear their clothing around and many times non-Christians find it offensive and complain. You may have just been lumped into the complainer category and written off as such.

However, I do agree that it's off the cuff and unneccessary. That poor man has no idea the things he proclaims with that shirt. He really needs our prayers.

  11. I'm not so sure I would have said anything to him either.. I think I would have been so shell-shocked that I would have left the store and thought of a million things to say after the fact! Definitely unprofessional and definitely might me making a call to the manager! You have every right to be upset.. Makes you so sad!

I wouldn't say anything. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs.

  13. Well, here's the deal...in my humble opinion...in saying something to him about it, you would be feeding right into what he wanted. I mean, a person would only wear that for one of two reasons: he is either a satanist, or he wears it for shock value. Either way, why bother. If someone is a satanist, chances of changing his way of thinking in a brief interlude in the store are like nil. If it's just that he wanted to get his rocks off of shocking people, then you would be helping the inconsiderate little twirp by saying anything. Anyway, while I think it is ridiculous behavior, and offensive...I would have had to tell myself to take the higher road in that situation.
