Hello, My Name Is Kate And I'm The Biggest Pushover EVER

Yesterday Ian released Linda, the wild bird that Sam, Julie and the neighbourhood children collectively kidnapped rescued and begged me to let them keep. Ian headed out to the ravine and found a tree with a hollowed out spot in the trunk, made a comfy little nest and left Linda there. The children were so heartbroken.

Long story short - mainly because the details of this little negotiation have become somewhat disputed - we bought this for the children...

I know what you're thinking. We spoil our children.

I agree.

We could have used this experience as a key learning about the circle of life/can't always get what you want/whatever you want to put in here.

And I agree.

We already have a cat, a hamster and two guinea pigs.

Still... I caved.

Her name is Magic and she's a Budgie. Apparently she can be trained to fly only to certain spots and return to her cage, as well as say a few words.

I'll believe that when I see it.

Yes, I truly am the biggest pushover ever.

Stop beating yourself up...you are teaching your children valuable lessons about compassion, love and nurturing, responsibility. There is nothing better than the unconditional love of an animal, be it the furry, feathery or scaley type.
And yes, you can train budgies, they are brilliant and intelligent little companions. I had a blue budgie (named Blue) as an early teen who would cuddle into my neck as I lay on my bed to read a book, and often fell asleep snuggled into me :0)
He gave kisses when asked, came when called and only ever "pooped" in his cage!
    Good luck!

We had a bird actually 3. The first one i left the door open and poor Finbar flew out into the cold winter night. The second one was Tally she was my sisters bird and she pooped all over the house I didn't really care for her much. The third one was Mary's bird Dulula she was lovely and now she rests on our death shelf in the living room. Ahhhh the birds in our life. HAHAHAHAHA
