I Will Produce A Cookie I Like Or Die Trying

Lately I've been feeling the pull to try baking and decorating sugar cookies again. This urge started the same way it always does, with grandiose images of how perfect my cookies will look.

I wanted to make some pretty cookies to give to a friend to lift her spirits and some for a coworker of Ian's as a Thank You.

I scoured blogs for ideas. I gave myself pep talks in my head. I said affirming statements out loud.

Oh yes. I will produce a cookie I like or die trying.

I baked two batches of cookie dough.

Two batches is a lot of cookie dough in case you were wondering.

I decided on tulips, daisies and sunflowers. I also baked a whole whack of hearts and circles, just in case.

In case of what? Emergency??

Good thing I did bake those "in case" cookies because I ended up needing them.

This cookie decorating business is hard work let me tell you. I learn something new every time. Want to know what I learned this time? I learned that piping and flooding are for the birds. No matter what method I use, or what frosting recipe I try, I cannot get my cookies to look the way I want them to.

So, after destroying a dozen tulip shaped cookies, I decided to crack out my decorating tips and try something I saw on this blog.

The result?

Take a peek...

So simple, yet so sweet.

Encouragement...

And thanks...

These cookies are just about my speed and I'm ok with that. Finally.

Now, if I could figure out how to package them safely for shipping I'd be all set!

  1. Kate, they're adorable...just like YOU!! Seriously, tho...they're so cute!!

Amanda makes that whole piping flooding thing look easy...which is why I haven't tried. Well, that, and the fact that rolling out sugar cookies gives me panic attacks and high blood pressure.

  4. Oh, I love them! I wouldn't be able to do even that to save my life. Seriously, decorating all together is for the birds.

  6. I love those Kate! I'm with you - Amanda is a Goddess of Cookies and I love/hate her. I do okay with the flooding and such but it's the post-flooding decorating that kills me. I think her tip might be smaller than mine - all my prettiness smushes together and gets all lame-looking and my dots aren't dots so much as they're little bumps that flatten out and run together when I'm not looking. But, I have to say, I enjoy the taste of the cookies a little better without the icing on them. To flood mine, I use a spoon, believe it or not. I put a dollop of icing in the center and use the back of the spoon to gently spread it like jam to the edges. Then again, I also use a spoon to scrape the BM out of my girls' diapers into the toilet, so take that with a grain of salt. But those cookies turned out beautifully! For packaging and presenting mine, I like to use shirt boxes lined with tissue paper and covered with plastic wrap and a ribbon. :-) When you get that done, I'll send you my address so you can ship me some cookies, kay?

  9. Love these simple designs, especially the Faith, Hope, and Love ones. Maybe even I could do that. But for now, because my neighbor gifted us with 2 GIANT zucchinis, I'm going to make a chocolate zucchini cake and some zucchini bread. blessings on your day!
